Larry Stevig, SE, AIA, is a Principal Researcher in the Building Research Unit of State Farm’s Enterprise Research Department, based in Bloomington, Illinois. Prior to the last 15 years at State Farm, Larry practiced as a Structural Engineer for 23 years at several A/E design firms in Chicago, Peoria and Bloomington, Illinois. Larry is a Licensed Structural Engineer and Architect in Illinois, and Professional Engineer in six other states. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
At State Farm, Larry’s responsibilities consist of structural research on performance and durability of assemblies, materials and products utilized in buildings typical of State Farm policyholders (primarily light-frame residential construction), and subject to perils prevalent in the United States (primarily wind, wildfire and earthquake). He also participates in the building codes and standards development process, serving on several committees, and collaborates with the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) in the code arena. In addition to tracking published research, Larry performs hands-on testing at State Farm’s in-house laboratory, collaborates with external academic researchers, and has deployed for field research following catastrophes.
Outside of work, Larry is active in his church and likes sports. He and his wife enjoy traveling to see their children and grandchildren, and to the mountains of Colorado.
